There are two new time formats that you can choose in your user control panel. They are the am/pm and AM/PM ones, only without a leading zero, because "09:30 pm" is so very very wrong.

While I was there, I also added a yyyy/mm/dd date format because that's my preferred way to write it. The ISO dashes doesn't look as nice to me.

Hello,

If you pop by and look, or take one of the RSS feeds, then it will appear as if nothing is happening around here.

That's because the main part of the forum is not public.

I have views about the likes of Google, Facebook, etc intruding on our online lives in order to analyse, profile, and sell the results to whoever pays (and for whatever purpose, like gleefully subverting "democracy").

Additionally, I would like Aldershot to be a place where people can discuss whatever is on their mind openly and freely.

As such, the main part of the forum is only accessible once you have registered and been "activated".
Once that has been done, you'll be able to participate.

Otherwise, you'll only be able to read admin notices and the Playpen.

Hello,

I have made a few changes to the forum, as follows:

New registrations will now be checked against StopForumSpam automatically.
This is because my last four new users were spammers, and the one this morning was smart enough to realise that the playpen was accessible, so dumped a wodge of Chinese there.

I have reactivated the widget that warns if user names of they contain spaces or punctuation.

Four new themes added.

The themes that have been added are Blue (like you're probably looking at), Green (which looks more grey to be honest), Hello Kitty pink (!), and a sort of tan-brown calling itself Orange.

You might like to investigate these (selection at the bottom of each page) because they are slightly revised for clarity compared to the Default theme, but better yet, they are responsive, which means that you will get a nicely laid out version of this forum on your phone, not squinting to try to see the full desktop version!

Personally, I think "Orange" is quite pleasing to look at.

I have made a few changes today.

Fixed the missing Today / Yesterday in the British English messages.

Added two extra questions to your profile - asking how long you have been a RISC OS user, and what machines you own (RISC OS, Mac, Windows, etc).

Added a "mood indicator" option. It's a bit dumb, but let's see...

Added a country selection that puts a little flag of your country alongside your name in all sorts of places.
For Americans, Canadians, and Brits - scroll to the end of the long list of countries and you'll see a choice of state/province/parts of Britain.
Added "European Union" for us dispossessed expats that want to make a point.

Tidied the post icons so they fit on one line. Added icons for RISC OS, Power Button, Pencil, CD, and Bell.

Added a plug-in to handle the European Cookie rules. Sorry if it annoys, but them's the rules. You can opt in to having cookies stored, and you can opt out.
Opting out is pretty useless as you won't be able to log in... but it's a valid choice so you get that choice even if it's a bad choice!
Note that in all cases, one cookie will be saved to your machine so that you don't get asked this same question every single time. If you object to this (and never plan to come back), your browser will have a way of removing cookies. Désolé, le chose pour des cookies n'est pas traduit.

I wanted to add a plug-in to not allow certain characters in user names (following on from the issues one user experienced in logging in with a space in his name (that went away when he recreated his account without the space)) however it crashed out with the function mb_strstr being unknown. Strange...

Added a Dark theme, which might be more helpful if using Aldershot in low light situations.
That said, you should be careful going to Aldershot at night. You don't know what lurks in the darkness...

[if your browser supports scripting]

Underneath each message is a "Quote" button. Click on that to select the message for quoting. You can choose more than one message.

Then, in the quick editor at the bottom of the page, it will say at the bottom of the editor panel "You have selected one or more posts to quote. Quote these posts now or deselect them."

Click on "Quote these posts now" and the editor will show something like the following:

Code:

[quote="heyrick" pid='12' dateline='1234567890']
The text of the original message appears here.[/quote]

Edit the text to select the relevant part (it's better than quoting everything), and write your reply underneath it.

If you wish to do in-line quoting, it's a little more complicted, you should delete up until the first part of what you want to quote. Go to the end of the part you want to quote and press Enter a few times to push it down. Then write /quote in square brackets, followed by whatever you want to say.

For the next bit of quote, simply begin with quote in square brackets, put what you want to quote, end with /quote in square brackets, and again follow with whatever you want to say.

Repeat as necessary.

Feel free to experiment in The Playpen, and don't forget that you can preview what you've written before posting it, in order to check that it looks as you expected it to.

heyrick

If you are posting using a browser that provides the fancy toolbar, the simplest way to use it is to type something and then select the text and then apply the style you want.
With links, I find that it's a great help to place a comma or space, then back up, and then insert the link. This stops subsequently entered content from being taken as part of the link. Bug in the editor, I think. ;-)

In all cases, you can use manually-inserted markup. It's similar to HTML, but not the same. The tags go in square brackets, as follows:

This:

Code:

Text in [i]italics[/i].
Text in [b]bold[/b].
Text [u]underlined[/u].
Text [s]struck through[/s].
You can [b][i]mix them up too[/i][/b]!

Looks like this:
Text in italics.
Text in bold.
Text underlined.
Text struck through.
You can mix them up too!

You can use 'em' and 'strong' instead of bold and italic; but it's more to type. :-)

You can create lists:

Code:

[list][*]First[/*][*]Second[/*][*]Third[/*][/list]

[list=1][*]First[/*][*]Second[/*][*]Third[/*][/list]

First

Second

Third

First

Second

Third

You can insert links:

Code:

[url=https://heyrick.eu/blog/]Go visit my blog![/url]

Go visit my blog!

You can insert images:

Code:

[img]https://heyrick.eu/aldershot/images/icons/heart.png[/img]

If you are quoting somebody:

Code:

[quote]This is quoted.[/quote]

Looks like:

Quote:This is quoted.

You can also use 'code' to put things in a way that won't be parsed (as shown in the examples above). There's also 'size' for editing the text size (it's either 1-6, or a percentage), and 'color' (spelled the American way) for giving text colour.

For other ideas, Google for "BBCode markup".

[list=1][*]First[/*][*]Second[/*][*]Third[/*][/list]

First

Second

Third

First

Second

Third

You can insert links:

Code:

[url=https://heyrick.eu/blog/]Go visit my blog![/url]

Go visit my blog!

You can insert images:

Code:

[img]https://heyrick.eu/aldershot/images/icons/heart.png[/img]

If you are quoting somebody:

Code:

[quote]This is quoted.[/quote]

Looks like:

Quote:This is quoted.

I will, at some stage, look to sorting out a better theme (this is the default one).
