Spring doth spungeth

After a record breaking... what was it, 37 days of misery and rain or something like that, we've had two days of bright sunshine and it's been 18°C.

Accordingly, everything has breathed a big sigh of relief and started the "winter is over" routine.

There's definitely a green tinge to the Oaks.

It's not that I don't want to hear from my British friends, it's because your country makes stupid laws.

Crocus? Plural of crocus.
Rick, 26th February 2026, 14:08
Ah, crocus. Yes.

It's a bit of a 🤦 moment, isn't it?
David Pilling, 26th February 2026, 23:31
These things I always forget the name of...

Crocus, common species is Crocus tommasinianus, yours are akin, but a cultivar like Whitewell Purple or Ruby Giant

Plural: croci

Fans: croconuts

Swiss hard rock band formed in 1975: Krokus

a young shepherd who was changed by the gods into a saffron flower: Krókos, lit. 'saffron'

Easy to spot because they have a filiform leaf with a white band down the middle.

Greek shepherds dig them up and eat them - different species (Crocus pallasii or Crocus moabiticus)

The most amazing thing is that as flowers there is no stem, but if you wait until they set seed, the seed pod is poked up 2 or 3 inches on a stem.
David Pilling, 26th February 2026, 23:35
Crocus grow from corms, which is what the shepherds eat. But look for the seed in a couple of months.
David Pilling, 26th February 2026, 23:58
I'd be inclined to have ESP32cam, plus AI plus high energy laser weapon, trained on the area around the croci, likely penknife wielding Greek shepherd will be around snacking.
John, 27th February 2026, 09:42
Plural of crocus is croci only when speaking Latin, as demonstrated in David's post of 23:35 where he lapses back into English.

David mentioned a Swiss hard rock band formed in 1975: Krokus. I will counter with Gentle Giant, a British progressive rock band active between 1970 and 1980.

They were known for the complexity and sophistication of their music and for the varied musical skills of the members.

Fac me certiorem cum in Anglicam linguam decidam.

(Let me know when I lapse into English)
