Larder restocking protocol

In a recent comment, David Pilling made the obvious observation:

Staring at the larder... is there a protocol, that says new items are put in at the bottom of the pile or on the left, or at the back. Then you may come upon the problem of the item you just bought at the shop being older than one that is in stock - which is the 'newest' - shop storage may be better than home.

The answer is yes, there is a protocol. Just like in a supermarket, the things that expire later go towards the back. A couple more photos to stare at. ☺

Things with dates.
Things with dates.

More things with dates.
More things with dates.

Kitty photo

It's been a while since there's been a furry photo, so here's Anna inspecting the dodgy drain.

Anna and the Apocalypse.
Anna and the Apocalypse.

It's currently full of water because we had some heavy rain earlier, a side effect of Storm Lilian that's blowing through.
The man who came out to look at what needs done has committed to the 4th and 5th of September. Two weeks, I'll be about €1,200 lighter, but on the other hand when it rains hard I can feel happy that the water will be going into the pond instead of lingering around by the back of the house.

Let there be cake

Yup. Finally got around to making it. And am enjoying a piece while watching some odd magical-thing movie set in what looks like the '20s on ITV while the weather outside is quite unpleasant.

Cake.
See? The cake is not a lie.

Oh wow, you write the dates on things. Good idea. Suppose you could have colour coded stickers.

A bit optimistic to find order in supermarkets - often new stuff is shoved on the front of shelves. Shoppers churn stuff.

Pilling's algorithm for inconsiderate shopping - pick an item, store the date, pick another item compare the date with the first item, if there is a difference pick another item, if there is a difference to the first two - loop. Put the freshest item in the basket. Put rest of the items back on the shelf in a random order.

I recently waged a war with Sainsbury's over out of date self raising flour - they obviously had shelves full of old stock.

Do you write the dates on dates...

I write the date I bought a bag of sugar on the packet, along with a copy of the previous bag, as an ongoing project to see how long I can make a bag of sugar last. I've got five years of dates on my current bag, averaging one bag every nine months.

Good grief!

I have four 500g bags in stock. I'll need to have restocked before the end of the year.
My actual sugar consumption depends largely upon how much tea I drink. ☕

When I'm low on sugar, I get irritable and a headache starts. I keep a Mars in my locker to sneak into me during the lull between breakfast and when I eat (which is, I would imagine, largely responsible for my girth).

Now, I suppose I could go to a doctor, get a bunch of tests, special diet regime and all the other hoo-ha and expense. Or, since I visit doctors as a *last* resort, just make my tea sweet and carry on like I have for the fifty years prior.

HbA1c is the thing, standard NHS test these days. Blood sugar, but not of the moment, sees max for weeks past. Random internet guy does not give health advice. But you know, one day you will have this test. Crumbs, random internet guy does curses.
