Summer 2014 animé
The new animé season is almost upon us, so with the aid of zektr's nice list of shows, time to review what's there and see what's worth looking at.
Quick note - anything with a
struck out title means I'm not going to be following it.
The "[PV]" stuff is a link to the Publicity Video on YouTube. Obviously, PVs will be in Japanese only...
Free! Eternal Summer
Futsuu No Joshikisei Ga Locodol Yattemita
Another idol series? Pass.
(the girl on the right reminds me of Kirino Kosaka (Oreimo))
These sorts of stories can be interesting. I'll give this a try. Looks like nicely detailed art, if the PV is anything to go by.
Shirogane No Ishi Argevollen
Rail Wars [PV]
This could be funny, or it could be a huge pile of fail. Watched the PV and still don't know what it's about. I guess I'll just have to try it.
Tokyo Ghoul [PV]
So this is this season's eyepatch wearer? Looks like a male as well, which would be unusual. Sounds like one worth picking up. The crappy who-the-hell-releases-a-360p-PV-in-this-day-and-age PV hints at it being a pleasingly bizarre mindscrew. Yummy!
Interesting synopsis, interesting art style. I'll be picking this up.
Ugh. Too much pink. This looks like an idol show for tinies.
Sailor Moon: Crystal
Was never into the whole Sailor Moon thing. If I want "magical girls", I want it done Madoka style, thank you.
Sengoku Basara Judge End
Third season, never saw the previous two, so...
Sword Art Online II
Akame Ga Kill!
I'm 50-50 here. I'll try it, but only 'cos of the meganekko.
Sounded interesting until I noticed "BL" in the genre. Pass.
Ge kk an Sh ou jo No za ki-k un [PV]
I rather suspect Mangaka-san to Assistant-san to put me off this concept for life. There's only so many times you can see the same cheap pervy gag before you want to mercilessly punch the television. I may download an episode to see if it is worth looking at...
Pink hair, smiley chick with huge tits, the picture alone gives me a dozen reasons not to watch this, but I'm intrigued by the idea of a "Survival Game Club". The PV is basically girls with guns and a giant duck. Uh... I'll try it.
BTW: The title is Japan's attempt at saying "survival".
Space Dandy S2
This ain't Bebop.
Ao Hare Ride
Boring girl like heroines so want to learn some sort of dance? Right...
Synopsis: blah meh blah and spending his high school life dressed as a girl.
Animé: It's cute. He'll have pink hair. Girls will squee.
Reality: He'd get beaten unconscious on day one, put in a coma on day two. There would be no day three...
Second season. Never saw the first.
Momo Kyun Sword
Weird story, could be interesting provided it doesn't lean too heavily towards fanservice (re. the boobs). I'll try it.
Fate slash blah long title
Second season, never saw the first.
BL. Not interested.
Pass. Trying too hard to be >Yuki Nagato...
Yama No Susume S2
Never saw the first season.
Ai Mai Mi S2
Ditto - never saw first.
Kuroshitsuji: Book of Circus
Not familiar with Kuroshitsuji, so no point.
Persona 4 The Golden
Psycho Pass (rebroadcast)
Edited into 11 hour long episodes. This might be a better way to watch?
Why a schoolboy who time travels? Why not just set it in the Sengoku Era? Pass.
Flying penguin? Fish swimming in the air? Schoolgirls with katanas? Yup, sounds like it'll be interesting.
Seirei Tsukai No Blade Dance
I'll give it one episode to see if it is any good...
Right - here's the eyepatch girl. Bad news? She's another fliggin' idol (and pink too). Good news? She's undead... Oh, and promoting Hokkaido (the northerly island). Excuse me? WTF? Okay, I'll try this... [but the PV makes it look kinda dumb]
I'm 50:50 here. I'll give it an episode.
Rokujouma no Shinryakusha?! [PV]
This sounds like it would be too contrived, but I'll give it an episode. Watched the PV and... yeah... WHAT?
Never saw the first season.
Zankyou no Terror [PV]
This reminds me a little of "Eden Of The East", only less 'cute'.
Whoa - so not aimed at the age group of everything else here!
Not familiar with the story, so...
As this is performed "live" with motion capture for the animation, I'll watch an episode, if only to see what it comes out like.
And, the obligatory credits:
Not to mention, again, that the animé list that I am referencing here was created by zektr and downloaded from https://atxpieces.wordpress.com/2014/06/14/surprise-summer-anime-2014-chart-v4-5-and-future-plans/.
Series I'm interested in:
Series to which I am applying the "three episode rule":
- Tokyo Ghoul
- Psycho Pass (rebroadcast)
- Tokyo ESP
Series that have to impress in the first episode:
- Rail Wars
- Akame Ga Kill!
- Zankyou no Terror
That's quite a lot. My usual following-series is around five or so; so I expect this will be whittled down and boring stuff dropped. It also depends upon availability.
- Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun
- Himegoto (just to see how crass it is - 5min episodes)
- Momo Kyun Sword
- Seirei Tsukai No Blade Dance
- Rokujouma no Shinryakusha?!
- Minarai Diva (just to see a 'live' animé)

By the wattles of the holy Zatcoon, Rick, you give us glimpses of a reality that stands at an oblique angle to our own. Many thanks. If you need anything about the Wackernagel Position or Kratinjae's Second Law of Cryptorrhoid Affinities, let me know or look them up on Google.

By the wattles of the Zatcoon, the world you show us here appears to be standing at an oblique angle to our own. Fascinating. Or am I getting too old?
